Significance of using isolated footing technique for residential construction on expansive soils

Harry FAR,Deacon FLINT

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2017, Volume 11, Issue 1,   Pages 123-129 doi: 10.1007/s11709-016-0372-8

Abstract: Expansive soils cause problems with the founding of lightly loaded structures in many parts of the world. Foundation design for expansive soils is one of the most discussed and problematic issues in Australia as expansive soils were responsible for billions of dollars’ worth of damage to man-made structures such as buildings and roads. Several studies and reports indicate that one of the most common and least recognized problems causing severe structural damage to houses lies in expansive soils. In this study, a critical review has been carried out on the current Australian standards for building on expansive soils and they are compared with some techniques that are not included in the current Australian standards for residential slabs and footings. Based on the results of this review, the most effective and economical method has been proposed for construction of footings on all site classifications without restriction to 75mm of characteristic movement. In addition, it has become apparent that as design procedures for footings resting on sites with extreme characteristic movements are not included in the current Australian standards, there is a strong need for well-developed and simplified standard design procedures for characteristic soil movement of greater than 75mm to be included into the Australian Standards.

Manufacturing——Footing Stone of Modernization

Strategic Study of CAE 2002, Volume 4, Issue 10,   Pages 1-10

Abstract:

This paper, retrospecting the long process of human history, especially the social development of the world since the industrial revolution, makes a comprehensive and objective analysis on the historical role, present situation and future trend of the manufacturing industry and puts forward significant suggestions on policy-making for industrilization and modernization drive in China. It is state that manufacturing industry, especially equipment manufacturing is the pillar of industrialization, the major stage for technical advancement, the foundation of the sustainable development of the national economy, the key edge for international competition, and the guarantee of national security. There is still a wide gap between China and the developed countries in many sectors of industry. Due to the existing unequal and unjust world order, it is impossible for China, as a developing country, to realize industrialization and modernization without its own powerful manufacturing industry. To realize mechanization, automation, informatization and intelligent control in all sectors of national economy and social life is the great mission and onerous task of China's engineering community in the 21st century, china's own powerful and advanced manufacturing industry must be built by all means and utmost efforts in the favorable conditions of reform and opening-up.

New insights in the battle between wheat and

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2015, Volume 2, Issue 2,   Pages 101-114 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2015068

Abstract: Wheat stripe rust caused by f. sp. ( ) poses a great threat to wheat production worldwide. The rapid change in virulence of leads to a loss of resistance in currently resistant wheat cultivars, which results in frequent disease epidemics. Therefore, a major focus is currently placed on investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying this rapid variation of pathogenicity and coevolving wheat resistance. Limited by the lack of a system for stable transformation of and the difficulties in wheat transformation, it is not easy to generate deeper insights into the wheat- interaction using established genetic methods. Nevertheless, considerable effort has been made to unravel the wheat- interaction and significant progress is being made. Histology and cytology have revealed basic details of infection strategies and defense responses during wheat- interactions, identified cellular components involved in wheat- interactions, and have helped to elucidate their role in the infection process or in plant defense responses. Transcriptome and genome sequencing has revealed the molecular features and dynamics of the wheat- pathosystem. Extensive molecular analyses have led to the identification of major components in the wheat resistance response and in virulence. Studies of wheat- interactions have now entered a new phase in which cellular and molecular approaches are being used. This review focuses on the cellular biology of wheat- interactions and integrates the emerging data from molecular analyses with the histocytological observations.
